Five Minute Friday

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

Deep and Wide, Deep and Wide
There’s a Fountain flowing Deep and Wide
Deep and Wide, Deep and Wide
There’s a fountain flowing Deep and Wide.

I remember singing that song as a child. Complete with hand motions and wondering at the same time why we were singing about a fountain of water at church. But it was a fun song so I sang along anyways.

Now I know, personally, just what sort of fountain I was singing about all those years ago. Not a fountain of water, but a fountain of love and grace and mercies new every morning.

This fountain flows abundantly to all who ask. It flows deep, and it flows wide. Covering my sin. Washing away my shame.
Cleansing me.
Making me new.

It’s a love so deep and wide I’ll never understand it. But I’m thankful. So thankful.

“How deep the Father’s love for us.
How vast beyond all measure.
That He should give His only Son.
To make a wretch His treasure.”

  1. We still sing that song when we go to a nursing home once a month. What a beautiful post!! Thanks so much, Mary Beth.

  2. Mary Beth, this was absolutely beautiful! I’m so thankful for His flowing fountain of love, forgivness, mercy and grace (and as a musician–and married to one too!–I also appreciated both songs you shared! =) )!

  3. A wellspring of life indeed. I remember singing that as a child too. That and “I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me. Makes the lame to walk and the blind to see. Opens prison doors sets the captives free…” Those were fun hand motions too. :)

Good memories. Good ties into the truth of how deep is deep. How vast is love.

  4. Isn’t it funny all the songs we sang as a child but never really understood… This little light of mine… I always wondered what that meant. This was such a sweet post. Love the song :) Bless you!

  5. Oh I love that song! Just love it! So thankful for your beautiful heart here, my sweet friend.

  6. I quoted this song from VBS, too! :) Thanks for the reminders.

  7. Thank you so much, Mary Beth! These were words I neede to hear at just the time I read them. Max thanks you, too. ;)

  8. Denise Oldham says:

    I love this, bless you.

  9. Oh I love the song you placed there at the end. We used to sing that in church and it was one of my favs.

And YES to His Wide love, His Wide grace, His Wide arms of mercy welcoming us back into His heart EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

  10. I must confess, my thoughts for today’s FMF word went to the same childhood song and memory of standing there singing. I have enjoyed reading another perspective on the thoughts that stemmed from there, and I adore the song you have included in your post!

  11. StefanieYoungBrown says:

Love, love, love!!! So thankful for the fountain which, as you said, “Cleansing me. Making me new. Whole.

    Complete.” Amen, sweet friend!

  12. Laurie Byrne says:

Oh, how I love this song! I also love your line, “fountain of love and grace and mercies”. I’m so thankful for that fountain. :)

  13. Ha! I thought the same thing as a child… Love that last song you posted. We sing it in church often.

  14. How Deep the Father’s Love…that’s the song that first came to my mind when I saw the prompt! Beautiful 5 minutes

  15. I love this line: ”
Not a fountain of water, but a fountain of love and grace and mercies new every morning.” Is there anything better than running to the fountain of Living Water every morning to be refreshed?

  16. Okay so I came here and see our opening lines are verbatim! I still sing this song with my children, and every time I do, I remember His love, freely flowing through me. Have a beautiful weekend my friend.

  17. Deep and wide indeed! I’m with Wendy…I’ll have a song in my head during my dreams. And what a wonderful song it is! Thanks Mary Beth for giving me sweet dreams tonight! ;)

  18. Love that we both thought of the same thing when we read the prompt tonight. Deep and wide. Love that He is so generous with is all…love and grace. Now I will have that lovely song in my head as I lay it on the pillow tonight. Thanks for sharing friend! Blessings!

  19. That’s exactly what I thought of! I put it on my blog, too, because I couldn’t get away from it. I also love that hymn. One of my favorites… Jamie @ One Blessed Lady

  20. This is beautiful! That song popped in my head too. I almost did a whole post on how my kids use to sing it. But the video is powerful…thanks for the encouragement. Blessings!

  21. Tammy_Skipper says:

I thought of that song too at first! So glad to understand the overflowing it represents for us.
